Shown here is the test running of an auxiliary steam engine, located in the engine room of the S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien at Pier 45 in San Francisco, California.
The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of only two operational Liberty Ships remaining from World War II.
This engine drives the pump that delivers seawater to the condenser for the main engine (also shown).
This interesting project involved the design, reverse engineering, and manufacture of a variety of parts to put the engine back in service, including a complete set of spare parts.
Parts for these engines have not been available since the 1940's.
It was a lot of fun working on a machine with so much history.
During World War II, the United States built and launched 2,710 Liberty Ships.
Though designed to manage a single ocean crossing, many Liberty Ships survived well beyond thier intended lifespan.
As of January 1, 2010, only two functional Liberty Ships remain.
The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien has the distinction of being the last unaltered, historically accurate, ocean going Liberty Ship.
Moored at Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf, she continues to serve as a monument and premier San Francisco attraction.
